About Me

Shamsa Aslam

Person-centred counsellor

As a qualified counsellor, I offer both in-person therapy sessions in Bradford and remotely nationwide. In my practice I use the person centred approach, ensuring that each client is seen and treated as a unique individual. By working at your pace, I tailor each session to focus on your specific needs and concerns, creating a supportive and compassionate space for growth and healing.

In addition to my person-centred approach, I draw upon a range of therapeutic techniques, allowing me to adapt to your needs and enhance the overall effectiveness of therapy. When working with children and young people, I find that incorporating creative and engaging methods often helps them better understand and resolve their challenges.

Before becoming a counsellor, I worked as a family support worker, where I gained extensive experience supporting families and children from disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as refugees from diverse cultures. This background has enriched my practice and giving me a deeper insight into the unique challenges faced by those from different walks of life.

I believe the relationship between client and counsellor needs to be based on trust and respect. Here, you will find a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions with professional guidance.

I have experience in providing counselling for a wide range of issues including:

  • stress & anxiety

  • depression

  • self-esteem

  • trauma & abuse

  • bereavement

  • Domestic violence

  • Isolation and loneliness

  • Disability and health related issues

  • Work related issues

  • relationship difficulties

I also have extensive experience in working with cultural issues and ethnic alienation.

Questions & Concerns

What to expect

In counselling, you have a secure environment to express yourself openly, free from any judgment. I understand that the prospect of undergoing counselling for the first time or collaborating with a new counsellor can be intimidating. Therefore, my emphasis is on creating an environment where nervous clients can feel at ease and comfortable. I take pride in providing a warm, non-judgmental, and friendly space, allowing clients to explore difficulties in a safe and secure manner.

FAQ

How does it work?

Once you have arranged to connect with me, we will book an initial session to discuss your counselling needs and requirements more deeply. I will discuss with you the ways I work and recommend a path tailored specifically to your requirements. Depending upon the context you present we will agree a way forward and a contract for working.

Confidentiality

Everything discussed in therapy is confidential. The only times when this is not the case is if your therapist is concerned that you are at immediate risk of harm to yourself or to others. The only other time confidentiality could be breached is if information is requested by a court order.

What happens in the first session

In the first session, you will have the opportunity to talk more about yourself and your wishes and aims from therapy. I will also ask some brief questions about your general health and background. I will review the context of the contract provide you the opportunity to ask any unanswered questions. We all also use this session to discuss the terms of the counselling contract.

What if I need to cancel a session?

If you cannot make a session please, where possible, give forty eight hours’ notice. You can pay by cash, check or bank transfer. There would be a £25 charge for missed sessions, as I would still have to pay for the room and other expenses. If you miss a in person session, without notifying me and I am waiting for you, there would be a full charge for that session. If I need to cancel, I would endeavour to give you forty eight hours’ notice. There would be no charge.

How many session would I need?

This varies from person to person, and is something we can talk about in the first session. I provide open ended therapy, therefore we can see how we go and regularly review our work to check that's it's moving in the right direction for you.

How often will my session be?

The sessions are scheduled on a weekly basis, at the same time each week. A session lasts 50 minutes with a 10 min summary and closing. You may wish to book an initial block of sessions or engage in open-ended work. I conduct a review every 4-6 sessions to check you are getting what you want from sessions.
